The Anthony Asylum: ‘The Deathmatch Lives On’

Welcome to the world of Deathmatch wrestling. Here, anything goes! Foreign objects like chairs, ladders, tables, thumbtacks, barbed wire, fire, glass, saws and weed whackers are not only allowed, but greatly encouraged. In Japanese and American hardcore promotions, such as Combat Zone Wrestling, competitors will use anything at their disposal to cause harm to their opponent. Now, promotions like the WWE for example, do not allow deathmatch wrestling due to it elevated levels of blood and violence. Not a good look for a publicly traded company. Because of this, most fans of deathmatch promotions are fans solely tuning in for its...

The Anthony Asylum: ‘Preserving The Demon King’

All over the internet recently, all I have seen was fans wanting Brock Lesnar vs. Finn Balor for the WWE Universal Championship ever since ‘The Conqueror’ defeated Goldberg for the title back at WrestleMania 33. I have seen a vast array of responses from people, both positive and negative, on the possibility of such an encounter. Yes, this is a money match that will draw like simply because of who’s involved. Finn is one of a select few Superstars who seems to be beloved by fans young and old, women and men. Now, I am all for the underdog story, the smaller guy...

The Anthony Asylum: ‘Monday Night Flaw’

As any good comic book writer will tell you, when creating your hero, they need to have a flaw. What is that flaw? Could it be self-doubt like Luke Skywalker? How about Kryptonite for Superman? Is it the fear of the unknown like Dorothy Gale?  Hell, all of the members of Dorothy’s party in ‘The Wizard Of Oz’ have flaws. They’re not really “flaws” though in terms of the story, more like “obstacles” they will have to overcome in order to gain success. If your hero has no flaws in a story, then said-hero becomes boring or one-note. I remember the many years...

The Anthony Asylum: ‘Getting Evicted From Her House’

In the summer of 2016, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon announced that there would be a WWE Draft, Superstars being selected to RAW and SmackDown Live, revisiting an old concept to create competition within the company. One of the pioneers and standard bearers of the new revolution of women’s wrestling, Paige, was chosen by RAW, but we never saw the former multi-time Divas Champion and it was later revealed she was on the shelf due to injury. Not long after the news of her injury, Paige was suspended from the WWE for violating the company’s wellness policy, which is where we first learned of the...

The Anthony Asylum: ‘The Next, Next Big Thing’

This past Monday night on RAW, Braun Strowman faced off against Big Show in another main event outing between these two that surpassed expectations. The two worked about as great any big man vs. big man match that you’ll ever see in WWE, after doing shocking us with a similar performance not too long ago. The signature moment this time around however, came when ‘The Monster Among Men’ took ‘The World’s Largest Athlete’ and superplexed him from the top rope, giving way to the inevitable ring collapse stunt that had the crowd jumping out of their seats. The previous week, Strowman brutally attacked Roman...

The Anthony Asylum: ‘The Journey Of The American Nightmare’

There is something to be said for a father and son bond like the one that existed between ‘The American Dream’ Dusty Rhodes and his youngest son, Cody; the former WWE Superstar that has chosen to walk a similar path originally trudged by his father all those years ago in the territories. Their bond is one built of blood, sweat and tears, often times sounding like the cheers and boos of a mere few hundred people in a dimly lit gymnasium or expo center, all of which sit atop their uncomfortable steel folding chairs, sipping on soft drinks and eating concession stand...

The Anthony Asylum: ‘The Laughable Follies & Epic Failures Of Impact Wrestling’

For weeks, we’ve heard constant promotion, a lot of it in the form of ‘The Pope’ D’Angelo Dinero antagonizing Josh Mathews on commentary, about new management, new ownership and a new direction for the company formerly known as Total Nonstop Action. The previous owner of the company before Dixie Carter took the reigns, Jeff Jarrett, has been tweeting about important meetings he’s been having lately in the United Kingdom and more recently, India. Impact is no longer under the control of Dixie, the one who has been the topic of blame for many of TNA’s woes over the past several...

The Anthony Asylum: ‘A Familiar, Fresh Breath Of Air’

Insane Championship Wrestling (for those unfamiliar with the brand) is the rebirth of the Attitude Era filtered through the perspective of United Kingdom wrestling fans; gritty, funny (and by funny I mean actually funny), unfiltered, character-focused, rivalry-focused and reality-based. The roster isn’t made up of baby oil covered, catchphrase-slinging, cartoon characters designed to appeal to a specific group of fans, while simultaneously appealing to every demographic. Many mainstream wrestling fans might initially be put-off by this. While there are “WWE-like” wrestlers in ICW (Drew Galloway, in particular), there is a wider variety of body-types and a vast range of gimmicks than what...

The Anthony Asylum: ‘The Mania Of The Royal Rumble’

Most wrestling fans consider WrestleMania to be the best pay-per-view of the year, but the Royal Rumble will always be my favorite. The Royal Rumble is like a wormhole in the WWE Universe; for a single night, neither fans nor Superstars act normally. During the Rumble, even the most hardened of smart marks are willing to suspend disbelief more so than usual. Hardcore and fair-weather fans alike create pools and take bets as if wrestling were the Super Bowl or World Cup Final. Fans argue intensely about who deserves a win to a degree which rarely occurs with other WWE pay-per-views....

The Anthony Asylum – ‘Kenny Omega: The Alpha’

After being involved in what many have called the greatest match in professional wrestling history, New Japan Pro Wrestling star Kenny Omega tweeted he is leaving Japan in his rear-view mirror….for the time being. ‘The Cleaner’ came up short against Kazuchika Okada for the IWGP Championship at NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 11 on January 4th, however the incredible bout between the two was the first that Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer scored six stars. Currently, there’s much speculation about a move to the WWE after announcing that he will be stepping away from Japan to think about his future. Omega made the announcement...

The Anthony Asylum: ‘InZayn In The Membrane’

While everybody is talking about Brock Lesnar, Goldberg and how their confrontation will go down at the Royal Rumble, I’ve got my eyes on the prize of figuring out who is going to win the damn thing this year and it’s not going to be one of those two. One of the best things about the brand split is that it makes the Royal Rumble interesting to me again. The last few years, wrestling fans have basically known what was going to happen. With two title matches at WrestleMania, WWE has the ability to give a more shocking winner this...

The Anthony Asylum: ‘Keep…It…Tight!’

Are you a devoted wrestling fan? And by “devoted,” I mean that you watch numerous wrestling shows each and every week; SmackDown Live, RAW, NXT, pay-per-views, etc, no matter whether you find yourself cheering in excitement or screaming in frustration at your television. If you are, you may have recently found yourself falling more into that latter category than the former. The current WWE roster is pretty solid right now, but it’s filled with a lot of underutilized talent. One of the people at the top of my list of underutilized wrestlers list is none other than RAW Tag Team...

The Anthony Asylum: ‘No Party Like A Superkick Party’

For fans that strictly watch WWE, it may be difficult to realize how much talent there really is outside of the “big leagues” these days. For certain performers, a great living can be made without the confines of a rugged schedule and a publicly traded company. One of the best examples of this is arguably the best tag team in the world today, The Young Bucks. One of the most popular tag teams in all of wrestling, I feel that when their current Ring of Honor contract expires, WWE must sign the brother tandem of Matt and Nick Jackson...

The Anthony Asylum: ‘Evolving The Women’s Evolution’

Throughout its history, WWE has been infamous for objectifying women. It has depreciated them. It has treated the beautiful ones as eye-candy and the not-so-attractive ones as lepers. It has shamed women for their appearance, finding ways to humiliate and embarrass them on live TV. For reasons like WWE being a scripted show – the company has gotten away with its depreciation of women for years, giving off the illusion that these women agree to the way their characters are portrayed and that it, somehow, does not make it hurtful. But, now WWE is supposedly different and do not...

The Anthony Asylum: ‘My First Time Was Hell’

I was sitting there watching an episode of Monday Night RAW when a commercial for WWE Hell In A Cell came on. At the end it said, “Boston, Massachusetts”, and I couldn’t help to start thinking about how awesome it would be to finally go to my first ever WWE event. I quickly snapped back to reality because I’ve been here before. I always tell myself I’m going to go, but it always turned out to be a, “Eh, maybe next time”, kind of thing. It was then that something remarkable happened. My fiancé, someone who I currently am getting hooked on wrestling, looked at me and said, “You should go.” It was a sign. The remainder of that episode of RAW was a discussion about how I’ve never been to WWE live, but always wanted to. It was there the decision was made for me. As I messaged a few friends about going to the event, I received a reply back saying quite simply, “I got us tickets, we’re going.” Immediately I was overcome with excitement. The first thing I did was look up my seats. By the time it was all said and done, RAW was over. Luckily, I had to give me the play-by-play on what I missed (#GetOnTop people, seriously…you’re missing out). The following weeks I followed each storyline intently. I wanted to make sure I knew every match that was...

The Anthony Asylum: ‘On The Fringe Of Complacency?’

A hell of a lot of people say John Cena cannot wrestle, receiving “You Can’t Wrestle” chants in arenas across the country. If I can be completely unbiased and fair, I say you should check out a Dean Ambrose match and compare the two. The ones who call ‘The Lunatic Fringe’ one of the best pure wrestlers in the world are not really looking at the overall package the right way. He’s certainly no Chris Jericho. In reality, Dean doesn’t have that much of a move-set and personally, I’ve grown tired of people saying he is the next ‘Stone Cold’ because he brawls like Austin....

The Anthony Asylum: ‘We’re All Heyman People’

Through its existence, the mainstream media has mostly viewed wrestling as a bottom of the barrel part of the entertainment business. By many, wrestling is seen as the redheaded stepchild of theater. Critics believe people in the business are not smart enough to run a real company, not talented enough to make it in a real sport or not believable enough to be a real actor. Critics also believe fans are pea-brained, never-do-wells with nothing better to do. Even though the curtain was pulled down decades ago, a lot of people view wrestling as a deceitful and fraudulent business...

The Anthony Asylum: ‘His Time Is Up, Who’s Time Is Now?’

John Cena’s days as a full-time WWE Superstar appear to be coming to an end. While he’ll always be affiliated with the company, it’s clear that WWE is trying to find someone who can replace him as the face of the organization. For the last two years, WWE has tried to put Roman Reigns in the ‘John Cena spot’, but up to this point, they haven’t been able to successfully do so. Of course, because of his size and look, they’ll continue to push Reigns as a top guy, but will he ever be able to become the face...
